First One

Here we go!

I thought I would use this blog to narrate certain life occurrences: music, movies, sexual encounters, cliche sayings... the usual. Hopefully, this will turn into a random pod cast (my hands cramp up from excessive typing) but, either way, on with the blogging...

I heard a very odd statement today, it wasn't the first time I had heard it, but it was the first time I actually thought about it. There was a story of a gay man who felt ostracized by his rural community because he was the only gay person there. Well, move out,don't take it personal, but if there are no gay people there for you to potentially date and become intimate with, then move somewhere where gay people are. Besides, there isn't much to do in a rural town anyway. I personally have never seen gay people as a problem to any facet of society, they are just looking for the same thing straight people are, who is anyone to tell them different.

What sparked this thought...

While in class today we had a small discussion on stigmas and social identity due to stigma.
Stigma, if you don't already know is: a negative projection (although it could be positive, but for the sake of this, it will be a negative) of a group of people, could be race, handicap, sexual orientation, what have you.

From stigma, society categorizes itself, we now have groups galore on many college campus and in many communities around the country, where people come together to immerse themselves with people of the like. It's also a place where people can be educated on certain groups. This is all well in good, but I can't help but to think that groups like these do the members a great injustice, and perpetuate the stigma further.

When are we going to unite people, when am I going to see a group on campus that reads something to the effect of: "Humans, the one thing we all have in common." It seems there are no groups out there set out to break through stigma without glorifying one group of people. When are we going to stop thinking about society as a collection of groups all working toward different goals? What that goal is? I'm not totally sure, but maybe it could have something to do with the unification of our society, we pretend like we are the poster society for the world, but I think we need to do a little more soul searching first.

I'm not going to sit here and bash America by any means, if you don't like it here then leave, simple and plain. The beauty of this country is that it can change, and has changed, and will continue to change, but we really need to change it together. Stop looking for reasons to individualize yourself and exclude others, YOU are alive and that makes YOU individual enough.
